Nantou Brown Glazed Brick Pottery Bowls

TW-4-05-26-0-D-0285-1~-3

This set of pottery bowls was made in Nantou, Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945), using brick pottery. The bowls were formed by hand-pulled clay and have their widest part at the mouth. They are coated with brown glaze, and a yellow glazed ring pattern can be seen on the shoulders, which is a characteristic of Nantou pottery. These bowls were traditionally used for serving food and have a flat rim for better grip, allowing for easy handling. Because the rim and the body of the bowl meet at right angles, they are also known as “angle bowls.”

Pottery bowls were often sold as a set of different sizes, stacked together from largest to smallest, and then fired in a kiln. The set is called a “tun,” which vividly describes how the larger bowl swallows the smaller ones. This naming convention reflects the early people’s use of colloquial language to name things.
