Taichung Dajia-Dong Characters-Pattern Bowl

TW-4-03-26-0-D-0287

This bowl was made in Dajia Dong, Taichung during the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). It is made of pottery and has a standard pot shape, formed by hand-pulling. It has a wide mouth and inward sloping bottom, with a light-colored circular mark on the rim, which is a trace left by the padding during firing. There is a circle of mat patterns on the upper half of the body, with the words “Dajia Dong” in the middle. This kind of bowls was used in early times to hold food, with the flat folded rim allowing for a good grip when moving it. Because of the right-angled shape between the rim and the body, it is also called an “angle bowl”. The first kiln in Dajia Dong was built by Lin Jingwei, called the “Inner Kiln”, which he later sold to others to manage. He then built another kiln called the “Outer Kiln”, which became an important kiln in central Taiwan in the early days. This bowl is a product of the Outer Kiln.
