Yilan Yi Tao Company Striped Brick Pottery Vat

TW-4-07-07-4-D-0241

This vat was produced in Yilan during 1895-1945 and made of brick pottery. Its shape is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom with an inwardly folded mouth rim. The body is coated with brown glaze and decorated with straight stripes. The lip is inscribed with the words “Baishijiao / Yi Tao Company / Supervised by”. Baishijiao is an old place name in the northeast of Jiaoxi Township, Yilan County, roughly including the present-day Baiyun and Yushi villages. There are records in the “Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo ” newspaper of pottery development in the Baishijiao area.

In the era before tap water became common, ceramic vats were an essential water storage container for households. The common shape of ceramic vats was designed for convenient storage and access to items, with the belly and mouth being larger to distinguish vats from jars.
