Zhangzhou Ware Red and Green Glazed “Tianxia Yi” Plate

CN-2-10-01-3-B-0190

This plate was produced in Zhangzhou during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was made of pottery that had been transformed to a texture close to the material of porcelain. The plate features a hand-painted flower pattern in red and green glaze, with the words “Tianxia Yi” (meaning “One World”) in the center, showing the distinctive characteristics of Zhangzhou ware.

Zhangzhou ware was a trading porcelain during the 16th-17th century Age of Exploration, and Taiwan was an important trading hub in the early 17th century, with trade mainly from the Netherlands, Spain, Japan, China and other places, with items such as spices, tea, silk and ceramics. The Koxinga family was a major trader of ceramics, and the trade ceramics were mainly traded through Taiwan from Zhangzhou’s Yuegang. In recent years, many trade ceramics have been unearthed in Penghu and Tainan, indicating Taiwan’s status in international trade at that time.
