This plate was produced in Zhangzhou during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was made of pottery that had been transformed to a texture close to the material of porcelain. The plate features a blue and white hand-painted design of phoenix, flowers and geometric patterns, and is very delicate.

Zhangzhou ware was a trading porcelain at the Age of Exploration during the 16th-17th century, and Taiwan was an important trading port in the early 17th century, with trade mainly from the Netherlands, Spain, Japan, China etc., with items such as spices, tea, silk and ceramics. The Koxinga family was a major trader of ceramics, and the trade ceramics were mainly traded through Taiwan from Zhangzhou’s Yuegang. In recent years, many trade ceramics have been unearthed in Penghu and Tainan, indicating Taiwan’s status in international trade at that time.
