Brick-Clay Sand Pot

TW-4-01-03-4-B-0232

This red brick-clay sand pot, known as “Gou-mu pot” in Taiwanese, is pronounced as “káu-bó-ue”. It was produced during the Japanese colonial period and made of red brick-clay in Yingge. The pot is shaped by pulling and has a round and bulging body, a contracted neck, and an outward flaring rim with wave-shaped ears on both sides. The pot comes with a lid that is flat on the top and pyramidal-shaped on the bottom, with a small strip of clay attached as a handle. The overall shape is round and plump, with thick walls. The addition of sand and stones to the clay mixture makes it heat-resistant and suitable for direct heating on a fire. The pot comes in various sizes, with larger ones having two ears and smaller ones having one handle for easy handling and placement on a stove. It is a traditional and essential tool for cooking and can be used for stewing meat and cooking rice, providing excellent heat retention.
