Miaoli Gongguan Kiln Flow Glazed Jar

TW-4-04-09-3-A-0253

This jar was made of stone pottery in Miaoli during 1895-1945. It was formed by hand-pulling and has an elongated oval shape. The body of the jar is decorated with a regular intermingling of white and green flowing glazes, with stunning color proportions and combinations.

The decorative style of Miaoli pottery is deeply influenced by the kiln master Jōichi Sakaki. He was a Japanese ceramic technician hired by the “Miaoli Kiln Industry Co., Ltd.” and founded the “Sakaki Pottery Factory” in 1933. Jōichi Sakaki was skilled in grinding bowls, kilns, and jars, and used a glaze spraying pot to form layered concentric flowing glazes, which became an important glazing technique in Miaoli pottery.
