Brown Glazed Brick Pottery Jar

TW-4-00-09-4-B-0243

This jar was made of brick pottery during 1895-1945. Its shape is slightly oval with a narrow opening and an outwardly folded mouth. The body of the jar is covered with brown glaze and has no decorative patterns. Transparent glaze was not applied, therefore, some of the glaze has chipped off, revealing the color of the brick pottery base material.

The pottery jar has many uses, including storing water, wine, rice, and other foods. It can also be used to make pickled foods, sake, soy sauce, and other fermented products. It was the most commonly used storage container in early folk life and can still be seen in the corners of rural homes throughout Taiwan today. It is an indispensable part of the rural image.
