Brown Glazed Striped Brick Pottery Jar

TW-4-00-09-4-B-0244

This jar was made of brick pottery during 1895-1945. Its widest point is at the shoulders with a narrow opening and a bottom that tapers inward. The body of the jar is covered with brown glaze and has straight stripes running vertically, with two chords at the top and bottom.

The pottery jar has many uses, including storing water, wine, rice, and other foods. It can also be used to make pickled foods, wine, soy sauce, and other fermented products. It was the most commonly used storage container in early folk life and can still be seen in the corners of rural homes throughout Taiwan today. It is an indispensable part of the rural image.
