Yingge Hand-Painted Rooster-Pattern Plate

TW-5-01-01-0-B-0124

This plate was made in Yingge during 1945-1964 and is made of pottery. The pattern is hand-painted using rouge and black glazes, depicting a rooster standing on one leg, very proud and majestic. The background is painted with a combination of green glaze grass pattern and brown glaze to depict the land. There is also a blue hand-painted rock on one side of the plate, and the edge is decorated with blue glaze lines. The pattern is very vivid and clear, and the rooster pattern is lifelike.

In early Taiwanese society, the rooster pattern was a common dish design. Drawing a big rooster in a plate not only meant “a big chicken brings good luck,” but also in Taiwanese, “ㄍㄟ (ke/kue)” sounds like “home,” and Taiwanese folklore tradition refers to a new home as “starting a family” (khí-ke). Therefore, the rooster pattern also symbolizes the social and cultural significance of starting a family and building a home.
