Yingge Hand-Painted Rooster-Pattern Bowl
TW-5-01-00-0-B-033
This bowl was made in Yingge during 1945-1964 and is made of pottery. The bowl body is painted with a light green glaze as the base color, and decorated with white glaze geometric lines. The rooster pattern is hand-painted using red, yellow, and green glazes underneath the glaze, and the green glazed grass pattern is added with rouge coloring. There is also a mountain in the distance, hand-painted with green glaze, making the pattern very vivid and clear.
In early Taiwanese society, the rooster pattern was a common dish design. Drawing a big rooster in a bowl not only meant “a big chicken brings good luck,” but also in Taiwanese, “ㄍㄟ (ke/kue)” sounds like “home,” and Taiwanese folklore tradition refers to a new home as “starting a family” (khí-ke). Therefore, the rooster pattern also symbolizes the social and cultural significance of starting a family and building a home.
