Yingge Hand-painted Pine-and-Crane-Pattern Plate

TW-5-01-01-0-B-0123

This plate was made in Yingge during 1945-1964, and is made of pottery. The pattern on the plate is a pine and crane, hand-painted with blue and white to create a lively pair of cranes in various postures. Rouge-red dots decorate the top of the cranes’ heads, while brown glaze is used to depict rocks and pine branches on both sides of the red-crowned crane with clear and concise lines. Green glaze is used to stamp pine leaves, and rouge-red and blue are used to draw the sun and some line decorations. The shades of the brushstrokes show the traces of hand-painting. The edge of the plate is decorated with a blue border, which is very elegant.

The crane pattern is common in Asian bowl patterns, as cranes have been regarded as divine birds since ancient times, with the title of a first-grade bird. The red-crowned crane is a symbol of longevity, and thus, crane patterns are often used to express wishes for longevity and well-being. In Taiwanese, the pronunciation of the word “crane” sounds like the word for “good” (HÒ), which conveys the meaning of very good and auspicious. Therefore, crane patterns are very popular.
