Yingge Hand-Painted Coconut-Landscape-Pattern Plate

TW-5-01-01-0-B-0090

This plate was produced in Yingge during1945-1964 and made of pottery. Using light green and brown glaze, two coconut trees and green land are hand-painted on the left side of the plate. The scraped glaze technique is used to present the circle marks of the coconut trunk, and the ocean is depicted on one side with blue ink wash. A sailboat is hand-painted in brown glaze, and the edge of the plate is decorated with a blue border, showing the unique charm of the southern islands.

The coconut landscape pattern was popular in Taiwan in the 1950s and 1960s. As Taiwan is located on the Tropic of Cancer and has a subtropical climate, the coconut and ocean views are important geographical landscapes. Therefore, early bowl and plate patterns often depicted coconut trees, sailboats, and ocean views as materials to showcase the tropical island scenery, showing a local style that blends with the cultural landscape.
