Yingge Hand-Painted Rouge-Red Shrimp-Pattern Bowl
TW-5-01-00-0-B-0031
This bowl was produced in Yingge, Taiwan during1945-1964, and is made of pottery. The clay of this bowl is relatively white, and it is hand-painted with rouge-red shrimp patterns. The deep green glaze depicts water grass patterns on one side, and flowers are painted with rouge-red coloring. Blue patterns are used to depict water wave patterns. The blue edge and embossed decoration make it a small, rustic-looking bowl.
Fish and shrimp patterns are commonly seen in the early Taiwanese bowl and plate decorations, symbolizing “abundance year after year” in everyday life. Fish and shrimp also represent prosperity and happiness when they appear on dining tables and at banquets, reflecting the psychological hopes and desires of Taiwan’s early ancestors for “fish to eat.” It is one of the important cultural symbols and meanings of early Taiwan.
