Yingge Hand-Painted Grape-Pattern Plate
TW-5-01-01-0-B-0119
This plate was produced in Yingge during 1945-1964 and is made of pottery. It features a hand-painted grape vine pattern in blue glaze with additional rouge and white glazes for the grape fruits. The leaves are highlighted with black glaze to add depth and the vines are painted with curves and twists to enhance the elegance of the design.
The grape pattern was a common design in early Taiwanese society and symbolizes vigorous vitality with its image of grape clusters hanging heavily from the vines. The fact that the grapes come from a single root and produce many fruits also represents the pursuit of “many children and grandchildren” by the ancient people, signifying the prosperity of offspring and the passing down of traditions from generation to generation.
