Yingge Hand-Painted Blue-and-White Shrimp-Pattern Bowl
TW-5-01-00-0-B-0014
This bowl was produced in Yingge during 1945-1964, and is made of pottery. This bowl has a strong antique flavor, with hand-painted blue-and-white glaze depicting a long-armed large shrimp, with each section of the body textured by scraped glaze. The blue-and-white color is strong and the shrimp image is vivid and powerful. On the side, red and green geometric lines are hand-painted for added liveliness, while the edge of the bowl is decorated with a sunflower border, combining an antique style with a modern touch.
Fish and shrimp patterns were commonly seen in early Taiwanese bowl and plate designs. In daily life, fish and shrimp patterns represent ” abundance year after year ” and the appearance of fish and shrimp on the dining table represents wealth and happiness, embodying the early Taiwanese people’s desire and expectation for fish. It is one of the important cultural symbols and meanings of early Taiwan.
