Yingge Hand-Painted Fish-Pattern Bowl
TW-5-01-00-0-B-0030
This bowl was produced in Yingge during 1945-1964, and is made of pottery. The inner pattern of the bowl features a large hand-painted carp using blue and rouge-red colors, with scraped glaze to create the texture of fish scales. Additionally, hand-painted blue wave patterns, green glaze, and light brown glazed water grass are added to create the scene of the carp swimming among water grass and playing in the waves. The edge of the bowl is decorated with a flower border.
Fish and shrimp patterns were commonly seen in early Taiwanese bowl and plate designs. In daily life, fish patterns represent “surplus year after year” and the appearance of fish on the dining table represents wealth and happiness, embodying the early Taiwanese people’s desire for fish. It is one of the important cultural symbols and meanings of early Taiwan.
