Yingge Hand-Painted Crane-Pattern Bowl
TW-5-01-00-0-B-0048
This bowl was made in Yingge during 1945-1964, and is made of pottery. The inside of the bowl is hand-painted with a blue and white crane pattern, with rouge-red dots on the top of the crane’s head, and a lush green forest painted in dark black-green glaze around the bowl. The rim of the bowl is designed with a sunflower pattern and decorated with a blue border. The back of the bowl has a chrysanthemum embossed pattern, which is very unique and elegant.
The crane pattern is common in Asian bowl and plate patterns, as cranes have been regarded as divine birds since ancient times, with the title of a first-grade bird. The red-crowned crane is a symbol of longevity, and thus, crane patterns are often used to express wishes for longevity and well-being. In Taiwanese, the pronunciation of the word “crane” sounds like the word for “good” (HÒ), which conveys the meaning of very good and auspicious. Therefore, crane patterns are very popular.
