Fish and shrimp patterns were common decorations on Taiwan bowls and plates in early period. The fish pattern symbolizes “abundance every year” in common people’s lives, and the appearance of fish at banquets also metaphorically represents wealth and happiness, embodying Taiwanese people’s desire for “food with fish” in early period. It is one of the important cultural symbols and meanings of Taiwan in early period. The paired fish pattern also has rich cultural meanings such as marriage, love, harmony, and Tai Chi.
This plate is the prototype of the enlarged fish plate displayed in the lobby of the Taiwan Bowl and Dish Museum.
