Yingge Stamped Shrimp-Pattern Oval Plate

TW-5-01-01-0-B-0063

This plate was made in Yingge, Taiwan during1945-1964, and is made of pottery. It is an oval plate, with a large shrimp on the plate surface stamped in blue and white glaze, surrounded by water grass decorations, and four small shrimp around the edge of the plate, all with a humorous design.

Fish and shrimp patterns were commonly seen in early Taiwanese bowl and plate decorations, symbolizing “abundance year after year” in everyday life. When fish and shrimp appeared on the dining table, it also symbolized prosperity and happiness, representing the ancestral desire and expectation for “abundance year after year.” This was one of the important cultural symbols and meanings in early Taiwan.
