灰釉豆腐乳罐

Ash Glazed Fermented Tofu Jar

TW-4-00-18-4-B-0279

This jar was made of pottery during 1895-1945. Its shape is cylindrical with a wide mouth, straight walls, and a grey glaze on the body. The surface is plain without any decoration. The shape of the fermented tofu jar is different from other pottery jars. The straight walls are designed to accommodate the square shape of tofu, making it easier to stack the fermented tofu jars. The wide mouth is also convenient for filling and removing the contents. In addition, the mouth of the fermented tofu jar is usually slightly indented below, allowing a rope to be tied to seal the jar when preserving food.

In the past, people used to make their own food, so there were many containers for preserving various foods in every household, reflecting the lifestyle of the time.
